The short answer
A same-day boiler repair usually means a Gas Safe engineer visits the day you call, diagnoses the fault on site and fixes it there and then if the part is on the van. Most calls to us are answered the same day, often within the hour. Before you ring, check the pressure gauge, the thermostat, the timer and whether the fault code is showing — it saves time and sometimes solves the problem.
Quick checks before you call
A surprising number of 'broken' boilers are really a setting, a tripped supply or a frozen pipe. Running through a few simple checks takes five minutes and means you can give the engineer useful information when you phone.
- Pressure gauge: most sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Below 1 bar the boiler may lock out.
- Power: check the fused spur next to the boiler is on and the display is lit.
- Gas: confirm your hob works and your prepayment meter (if you have one) has credit.
- Controls: make sure the thermostat is set above room temperature and the timer is calling for heat.
- Condensate pipe: in freezing weather, a frozen plastic pipe running outside is a very common cause of lockout.
- Fault code: write down any letters or numbers on the display — it narrows the diagnosis before we arrive.
What the engineer does on arrival
The visit starts with a conversation: when the problem began, whether it affects heating, hot water or both, and whether anything changed recently such as a power cut or work in the house. The engineer then checks gas supply and pressure, reads stored fault history where the boiler keeps it, and tests the components linked to the symptom.
Once the cause is found you are told what is wrong in plain English, what the fix involves and whether it can be done on the spot. Nothing is replaced without your agreement. When the work is finished the boiler is fired up, combustion and safety checks are carried out, and you are shown that heating and hot water are both working properly.
Faults that are usually fixed on the first visit
Many repairs need nothing more than an adjustment, a clean or a common part. These are the ones most often completed the same day:
- Low system pressure caused by a small weep or a recently bled radiator.
- A frozen condensate pipe that needs thawing and insulating.
- Airlocks stopping water circulating around the radiators.
- Blocked condensate traps and dirty ignition or flame sensing electrodes.
- Faulty thermostats, programmers or wiring connections.
- Sticking pumps that have seized after a summer switched off.
When a second visit is needed
Some parts are model-specific — printed circuit boards, heat exchangers, fans and gas valves among them. If the part is not carried on the van, the engineer will make the boiler safe, explain the fault and order the correct manufacturer part so the repair can be finished as soon as it arrives. Where it is safe to do so, heating or hot water can sometimes be left partly running in the meantime.
If the boiler is very old and the repair would be expensive, you will be told honestly. Sometimes replacing the boiler is better value than repeated repairs, and our repair-or-replace guide explains how to weigh that up.
When it is an emergency
If you smell gas, do not wait for a boiler engineer. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can, open windows, avoid switches and naked flames, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Once the supply is made safe, a Gas Safe engineer can then trace and repair the fault.
Water pouring from the boiler, a carbon monoxide alarm sounding, or a vulnerable person in a cold home are also reasons to call straight away rather than waiting until morning.
How to get the fastest help
Phone rather than email when the heating is off — calls are handled first. Have your boiler make and model ready (usually on a label on the front or underneath), the fault code, and a brief description of what the boiler is doing. Clear access to the boiler and the gas meter also helps the visit run quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Can every boiler be repaired on the same day?
Not always. Common faults are usually fixed on the first visit, but model-specific parts such as circuit boards or heat exchangers may need ordering. In that case the boiler is made safe and the repair is completed when the part arrives.
Should I reset my boiler before calling?
One reset is reasonable, following the manufacturer's instructions. If it locks out again, stop resetting and call an engineer — repeated resets can hide a fault that needs attention.
Do you repair all boiler brands?
We work on the major brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Glow-worm, as well as most other common gas boilers.
Is a boiler with low pressure dangerous?
Low pressure is not dangerous in itself, but the boiler will usually stop working to protect itself. If you keep having to top it up, there is a leak somewhere in the system that should be found and fixed.
