How to choose a Gas Safe plumber near you

The short answer

Anyone working on gas appliances in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card, check the back to confirm they are qualified for the specific work, such as domestic boilers, and look them up on the Gas Safe Register website. For water-only plumbing no gas registration is needed, but experience, clear quotes and local reviews still matter.

Why Gas Safe registration matters

The Gas Safe Register is the official list of businesses legally allowed to work on gas appliances in Great Britain. Poorly fitted or repaired gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Using an unregistered person for gas work is illegal and can also invalidate your home insurance and boiler warranty.

How to check an engineer

It takes a couple of minutes and is worth doing every time:

  • Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. It has a photo, a licence number and an expiry date.
  • Turn the card over. The back lists the types of gas work they are qualified for — make sure it includes the job you need.
  • Search the business or licence number on the Gas Safe Register website, or call the register directly.
  • Make sure the person at your door is the person on the card.

Questions to ask before you book

A good plumber or heating engineer will be happy to answer these:

  • Will you visit and look at the job before quoting for larger work?
  • Is the quote fixed, and what does it include?
  • Who will actually carry out the work?
  • What guarantee do you give on your workmanship?
  • Will you register a new boiler with the manufacturer and notify building control?

Warning signs

Be cautious if you notice any of these:

  • Reluctance to show a Gas Safe ID card.
  • Pressure to decide on the spot or pay large sums in cash upfront.
  • Quotes that are vague about what is included.
  • No landline, address or way to contact them after the job.
  • Claims that a working appliance is dangerous without a clear explanation.

Why a local engineer helps

Choosing someone who works regularly in your area means shorter travel times, easier follow-up visits and knowledge of the housing stock and water conditions nearby. We are based in Harlow and cover West Essex and East Herts; our areas page lists the towns and villages we work in.

Plumbing work that does not need Gas Safe

Jobs that only involve water — taps, toilets, leaks, showers and appliance plumbing — do not require Gas Safe registration. For these, look for experience with the type of job, a clear quote and good feedback from previous customers. Many plumbers, like us, handle both gas and water work, which is convenient when a job touches both.

What to expect from a good visit

A professional engineer turns up when agreed or lets you know if they are delayed, protects floors and surfaces, and explains what they have found before starting work. For gas jobs they should test the appliance and its safety devices before leaving, and give you written paperwork: a service record, a gas safety record or, for a new boiler, commissioning and warranty documents.

They should also leave the area as clean as they found it and tell you about anything that needs attention later, without pressure. If a problem is found that makes an appliance unsafe, the engineer is required to explain the risk and may ask your permission to turn it off until it is repaired. That is a safety procedure, not a sales tactic, and they should show you why.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to use a non-Gas Safe engineer?

Yes. By law, anyone working on gas appliances or fittings in Great Britain must be on the Gas Safe Register.

How do I check a Gas Safe number?

Enter the engineer's licence number or business name on the Gas Safe Register website, or call the register, to confirm they are registered and qualified for the work.

Does a plumber need to be Gas Safe to fix a leak?

Not for water leaks. Gas Safe registration is only required for work on gas appliances and gas pipework.
