Noisy boiler? Here's what those sounds actually mean

Different noises point to different faults. A kettle-like whistle is not the same as a banging when the boiler shuts down. Diagnosis first, fix second.

Locally based in your area

Not a national chain — your local engineer, your local prices.

The likely causes, in order

  • Kettling (whistling / rumbling) — Limescale or sludge build-up inside the heat exchanger. Water boils rather than flowing smoothly. Fix is chemical descale + inhibitor, or full power flush.
  • Banging on shutdown — Usually thermal expansion of undersized pipework, or a failing pump. Sometimes fixed by a pump replacement, sometimes by pipework upgrade.
  • Gurgling when running — Air in the system or blocked condensate trap. Bleed radiators + clear condensate trap first.

What you can safely try first

  • Note WHEN the noise happens — on start, running, or shutdown
  • Try bleeding radiators to release any trapped air
  • Check the pressure gauge is between 1 and 1.5 bar cold

Frequently asked questions

Can I ignore it?

Kettling in particular damages the heat exchanger the longer it goes on. It's cheaper to fix now than replace the boiler later.

Is a power flush the answer?

Often yes, but not always — we diagnose first rather than defaulting to the most expensive fix.
