Smell of gas? Do this first — before you call anyone
A gas leak is dangerous. Follow the steps below in order, then call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 — free, 24/7. Don't call us first; call them.

The likely causes, in order
- Loose meter fitting — Most gas smells trace to a loose fitting at the meter or the isolation valve.
- Perished joint compound — Older jointing paste dries out and loses its seal. Usually a straightforward remake by a Gas Safe engineer.
- Failed appliance regulator — Cooker or fire regulator can fail internally. Isolate the appliance at its own valve until we can inspect.
What you can safely try first

Frequently asked questions
Will Cadent charge me for the visit?▾
No — the emergency call-out to isolate and make safe is free. Any subsequent repair is chargeable and needs a Gas Safe registered engineer (that's us).
Can I use a phone inside?▾
Move outside before calling. Static electricity from switching on a phone or lamp can ignite gas.
